The hospital

Founded in 1892, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital is one of China's earliest Western hospitals and today one of the country's leading tertiary hospitals. It has more than 4,600 beds and 6,400 staff, and has ranked in the top tier, grade A++, in China's national tertiary public hospital performance assessment for seven consecutive years. It reports links with more than 20 international friendly hospitals across 13 countries, including Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and UChicago Medicine.

Dental care

The hospital runs a Main Campus at Drum Tower, a Jiangbei Campus and a Southern Campus. The Jiangbei Campus describes itself as an international hospital, and its specialty centres include a Dental Medical Center that is operated and managed by Nanjing Stomatological Hospital. The hospital's own dental department spans the Drum Tower and Lishui, or Southern, campuses, with dental implant, orthodontics, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery and paediatric dentistry named as its specialities. If you want the full speciality dental centre, ask for the Jiangbei Campus when you book.

Visiting as a foreign patient

The hospital publishes an official English website with an English-language hospital overview, so you can orient yourself before travelling. The Chinese pages do not publish an English-speaking clinic schedule for dentistry, so state your language needs when booking and expect to arrange interpretation for the visit itself.

Practical notes

Appointments are real-name, and the booking notes explicitly accept a passport or a Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card as valid identification, which matters for foreign patients. Booking opens seven days in advance at 08:00, through the hospital's WeChat accounts, the nj12320 booking website, self-service kiosks, or the one-stop outpatient service centre. Registration fees are paid on the day of the visit, not at booking, and the Drum Tower main campus is in the city centre near the metro.
