Oral and maxillofacial surgery covers operations on the mouth, jaws and facial structures. Common reasons to be referred include deeply impacted wisdom teeth, cysts and tumours of the jaw, facial injuries, jaw joint problems, and corrective jaw surgery to change how the bite and face fit together.
These are hospital-based procedures, so they are usually carried out in a Grade 3A hospital's oral and maxillofacial department rather than a high-street clinic. Complex cases are planned from CT scans and often involve a team of surgeons working together.
