The hospital
The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine traces its origins to 1869 and was recognised by the Ministry of Health as one of the first tertiary care hospitals in China in 1989. In 2013 it was among the first Joint Commission International-accredited academic medical centres, and it describes itself as the cradle of western medicine in Zhejiang, running eight campuses with about 4,000 beds and 7,000 medical staff.
Dental care
Dentistry is delivered through four distinct departments, each with its own English page. General Dentistry was founded in 2013 and has 24 experienced dentists covering endodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, paediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, operative dentistry, orthodontics and dental implantology. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery dates to 1947 and is one of the national benchmarks for implant dentistry and maxillofacial oncology. Oral Medicine has a history of more than 70 years and handles periodontal disease, caries, pulpitis and oral mucosal disease, with cone beam CT, operating microscopes and oral panoramic radiography. Orthodontics and Prosthodontics makes up the fourth department.
Visiting as a foreign patient
International patients are seen through the International Medicine Department at the Binjiang campus, which offers a one-stop service excluding X-ray, CT and MRI, with doctors who come to the clinic for booked appointments. Language support is strong: most doctors speak English, there are more than 600 senior English-speaking specialists, and language volunteers cover other widely used languages, while direct billing is available in the department.
