The hospital
Shanghai General Hospital was founded in 1864 and is one of China's oldest general hospitals. It was among the first hospitals nationwide accredited as Grade 3A in 1992, and in the national tertiary public-hospital performance assessment it reached the highest A++ grade, ranking 12th nationally among general hospitals. It has north (Hongkou) and south (Songjiang) campuses covering about 453.8 mu, 1,820 approved beds and more than 5,100 staff.
Dental care
The Department of Stomatology was founded in the early 1950s by Prof. Gong Minzhu, who had studied in Germany. It has 36 dental chairs and more than 100,000 patient visits a year, and it is a doctoral and master's degree training site in oral clinical medicine for Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Dentistry and Nanjing Medical University, with nine dentists on the roster.
Visiting as a foreign patient
The International Medical and Health Care Centre descends from the Friendship Ward established in 1956 and is one of the earliest units designated by the Shanghai municipal government for foreign medical services. It provides 24-hour outpatient, emergency and inpatient care, domestic and international remote consultations, travel medicine and event medical cover, with a health butler accompanying patients throughout the visit, and it uses a general-practitioner-plus-specialist co-management model. It works with 37 insurers on direct billing.
Practical notes
The centre's specialist strengths are ophthalmology, urology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, general surgery, haematology, endocrinology, oncology and emergency critical care — dentistry is a separate department, so a dental visit is arranged alongside the centre rather than through it. The centre also has long-term cooperation with the Mayo Clinic, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Cleveland Clinic and Israel's Rabin Medical Center for remote video consultation and referral. The north and south campus switchboards are both 021-63240090.
