The hospital
The Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences and Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital was founded in 1941 and was among the first hospitals in China rated Grade 3A. It is affiliated with the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and is one of the largest hospitals in Sichuan, with around 4,500 open beds and more than 7,000 staff, and it has been rated A++ in the national performance assessment for Grade 3 public hospitals.
Dental care
The Stomatology Center dates from the founding of the hospital in 1941, when it was set up under Professor Huang Tianqi, a graduate of the first class of the West China Union University dental school, making it one of the earliest independent first-level dental disciplines in China. It keeps long-standing cooperation with dental schools including the University of Washington, the University of Texas and the University of Copenhagen, and is organised into cariology and endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, prosthodontics, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, periodontics and oral medicine, with a multidisciplinary clinic for complex systemic disease in dental treatment.
Visiting as a foreign patient
A roster of the Stomatology Center's chief physicians, with photographs, is published on the department page, so you can see who works there before you travel, and the hospital also runs a Geriatrics and International Medical Service. There is no published English-language dental clinic, English appointment line or routine English medical-record service, so arrange interpretation locally and confirm arrangements by phone before travelling. General questions go to 028-87393999, patient enquiries on weekdays to 028-87393928; the emergency centre number, 028-87769262, is not for patient enquiries.
Practical notes
The Stomatology Center operates inside the hospital's main Chengdu campus, so dental appointments sit alongside the full range of general and specialist medicine on one site. Chengdu has an international airport with direct connections to major Asian hubs, and the hospital is reached by taxi or metro from the city centre.
