The hospital
The Eighth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, also known as Zhongda Bayuan, is a directly affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Futian District. It passed China's national Grade 3A general hospital review in 2021, has more than 1,500 beds and over 2,600 staff, and occupies a building area of 210,000 square metres. It is one of the Grade 3A hospitals closest to the Futian and Huanggang border crossings, which makes it practical for a day trip from Hong Kong.
Dental care
Dentistry is a Futian District key clinical specialty and sits on the 4th floor of Building 1. The department has 23 high-grade dental treatment units, 30 dentists and three full-time researchers, with five senior-title physicians. It has seven sub-specialties: endodontics, periodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, implant dentistry, prosthodontics, orthodontics and paediatric dentistry. Equipment includes chairside CAD/CAM, a root-canal microscope, an ultrasonic bone scalpel and painless anaesthesia devices, and listed techniques include digital chairside restorations, microscopic root-canal treatment, clear aligners, minimally invasive extractions and regenerative endodontics.
Visiting as a foreign patient
The hospital's International Medical Center opened on 27 January 2026, with outpatient clinics on the 8th floor of Building 4 and wards on the 14th floor. It serves foreign nationals in mainland China, overseas Chinese and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots, using a one-floor, one-stop pathway from booking through consultation, investigation and payment, with dental facilities included. Signage is bilingual Chinese-English, and the hospital states that it has launched medical direct-claim insurance services with dozens of domestic and international commercial insurers; ask your insurer to confirm your policy, since no insurer names are listed. Spoken-language support is unspecified, so bring a Chinese-speaking companion if you will need one.
