Inside a major hospital

The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is a Grade 3A general hospital on Tianhe Road in Guangzhou, with a full stomatology department. Dentistry is one department within the whole rather than a hospital in its own right, which in practice means the dental service sits on a large multispecialty campus with its own imaging behind it. Two switchboards are published, one for the Tianhe main campus on 020-85253333 and one for the Lingnan campus on 020-82179000.

What the department treats

The published scope is broad and familiar: dental implants, crowns and bridges, dentures, root canal treatment, periodontal care, orthodontics, children's dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery and general dentistry. Six clinicians are published, each as a stomatology consultant carrying a doctoral or master's supervisory title, though the listing does not break their work down by subspecialty.

Imaging and the microscope

Two items in the equipment list set this department apart from a routine dental service. It has CBCT alongside CT-based 3D reconstruction for diagnosis and treatment planning, which matters when a case has to be examined in three dimensions before anyone can plan it. It also works under a dental operating microscope: the published techniques include complex root canal treatment under the microscope and microscopic apical surgery, and both need one.
