The hospital
Tongji Hospital belongs to Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. It was founded in Shanghai in 1900 by the German physician Dr. Erich Paulun and moved to Wuhan in 1955, giving it a long-standing German medical connection; its Optical Valley campus is also known as the Sino-German Friendship Hospital. It runs four campuses with 65 clinical and paramedical departments, 11 national key disciplines and 43 national key clinical specialties.
Dental care
The stomatology department dates to 1952 and covers nine sub-specialties: endodontics, periodontics, oral mucosal disease, paediatric dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, temporomandibular joint disorders, prosthodontics and implantology, orthodontics, and oral radiology. Services range from microscopic root canal therapy and CAD/CAM chairside restorations to veneers, inlays, crowns, complete and partial dentures, implant-supported prostheses, orthognathic and cleft lip and palate care, and jaw tumour resection with reconstruction. The department has two wards with 108 beds, so it can look after complex surgical cases as well as routine dentistry.
