The hospital
Shanghai Tongji Stomatological Hospital is a tertiary oral-medicine specialty hospital at 399 Yanchang Middle Road in Jing'an District. It began as a dental clinic of the former Shanghai Railway Medical College's Ganquan Hospital in 1987, became the Stomatological Hospital of Shanghai Railway University in 1995, and took its present name when the university merged into Tongji University in 2000, the same year it was accredited a Grade 3 oral specialty hospital. It receives more than 500,000 patient visits a year.
Dental care
Prosthodontics and orthodontics are both national key clinical specialties here, and the hospital also holds a doctoral programme and a postdoctoral station in stomatology. Eleven clinical areas run across the site: endodontics, periodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, prosthodontics, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, implantology, general dentistry, a digital dental treatment centre and a special-disease clinic. A volunteer programme for children with autism has run for 15 years and served more than 6,000 patients, and the special dental clinic for autistic children is open to foreign children.
Visiting as a foreign patient
Outpatient care is fully appointment-based, with numbers released through the hospital's official WeChat account at 19:00 for the following day through day seven, and 24-hour dental emergency cover. Call the hospital's general line before you travel to confirm how a foreign patient books, and bring your passport for registration. Records are kept in Chinese, so plan for a Chinese-speaking companion or a translation app at the appointment.
Practical notes
The hospital works from a single campus at 399 Yanchang Middle Road, Jing'an District. Enquiries can be made by telephone or email, and the hospital publishes a general line for both.
