The hospital

West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, traces its origins to the Renji Dental Clinic of 1907 and is the cradle of modern stomatology in China. It is the first stomatological specialised hospital in China and the earliest tertiary-grade A hospital of stomatology in the country, and it serves as the National Center for Stomatology and the National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases. It holds eight national key clinical departments, covering every national key clinical specialty in stomatology, and ranked 4th globally and 1st in China in the ShanghaiRanking global ranking of dental subjects. If you are travelling to China specifically for complex dental work, this is the most specialised institution on this list.

Dental care

The main Huaxi Ba campus near the city centre runs the full range of subspecialties: cariology and endodontics, periodontics, oral medicine, prosthodontics, oral implantology, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, and oral and maxillofacial surgery covering head and neck oncology, orthognathic and TMJ surgery, and cleft lip and palate. The High-tech Zone Outpatient Department in the Chengdu Financial City district has 68 dental chairs and is positioned as the hospital's showcase for high-end and international care, with an explicitly named International Dental Center offering treatments aligned with international practice. It is the most convenient of the hospital's sites for a visiting foreign patient.

Visiting as a foreign patient

The hospital publishes an English version of its site with English department names, and its English contact page lists business hours of 8:30-16:30 with a medical-consulting line. A 24-hour emergency dental service is available for acute problems such as toothache, infection, bleeding and trauma. Subspecialty outpatient appointments at the main campus generally need to be booked through the hospital's own channels, and the international patient route runs through the High-tech Zone site, so plan your booking around that site rather than the main campus. Bring your passport.
